Policy & Regulation: Shaping new social contracts

Last week, I was invited to join the Miami Tech Summit. A day dedicated to discussion about technology policy and regulation.

Of course, regulatory environments influence innovative and financial possibilities. This is important for human progress.

Moreseo, the decisions and foundations established right now are creating our new social contracts.

Today, we are influenced by philosophies, ethical paradigms, and agreements that were established a very long time ago and have accumulated over time. Likewise, the frameworks we agree to now will have long-lasting influence far into the future.

Determining what does it mean, exactly, to belong to “The Republic”?

What does citizenship mean in globalization?

Personal freedom versus public accountability?

To what degree should we submit to state and/or corporate surveillance, for the collective management of society, versus protecting human privacy?

What does freedom and accountability look like with the technical potential for total surveillance?

What is property and ownership?

What does it mean to be a global citizen interconnected by digital networks and digital life?

These are big complex questions addressing rapid and emergent topics with so much nuance.

At the conference, I was impressed by the complement of leadership by Mayors Daniella Levine Cava & Francis Suarez.

Cava, the Mayor of Miami-Dade county, with a background in public policy law, social work and activism. Who is just as committed to the economic policies and innovations to support the quality of life of the population.

As a visitor and as a big fan of Miami, Florida I have loved witnessing the city become a leader and example of progress, entrepreneurship and innovation.

In terms of the conversations around policy & regulation, as a dedicated global citizen, we are just getting started.
